Removing green screens from AI images

What happens to the green

A simple remover deletes every pixel that looks green enough, which is why quick scripts leave a lime rim on every edge and bite chunks out of anything pale. ClipBrook treats the edge as arithmetic instead. An edge pixel is a mixture of subject and background, and once the background color has been measured, that mixture can be solved: a pixel which is 30% green screen becomes 30% transparent and keeps its true subject color in the other 70%.

Green’s own problem is spill. Image generators imitate photography, and a real object in front of a bright green wall catches green bounce light on its rim, so the models reproduce that faithfully. To a keyer, spill looks like background sitting on the subject. ClipBrook handles it the way film compositors do, by comparing each rim pixel against clean subject color sampled just inside the edge and replacing the green cast, so blond hair stays blond instead of turning swamp-colored.

Renderers also darken enclosed spaces, such as the hole in a wreath or the gap under an arm, so the green in there arrives as a darker, different green. A plain threshold leaves that behind as murky fog. ClipBrook looks for those pockets separately and clears them.

When green is the wrong key

Green is the wrong key for anything with leaves or plants. Their own green gets removed with the background. Leaves, stems, grass, moss, a frog, a green dress: the keyer removes the background color wherever it finds it, and it cannot keep a color it is busy deleting, so a green-on-green render loses parts of the subject and no slider brings them back.

Use blue for plants and foliage. True blue is the rarest color in plant material, and even most “blue” flowers are really violet. Use red for blue or purple subjects. Green is worth using only for a subject that leans blue and red at once with no foliage in it, a blue-and-orange racing car being the usual example, where blue and red would each collide with the subject and green is the one key left. The key-color advisor applies those same rules.

So if your green-screen renders are botanical, the fix is a re-render on blue, which is a one-word edit to the prompt.
